Stikeman Elliott LLP, one of Canada’s pre-eminent business law firms, is seeking an experienced lawyer to join our corporate practice as a member of our flexible legal workforce to provide support with respect to a wide range of complex corporate and commercial matters. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in a range of challenging and complex work but is looking for greater flexibility than traditional legal roles or someone who is returning to private practice.

Working as an independent contractor dedicated to Stikeman Elliott, you will have access to resources and supports a large firm has to offer with the flexibility to work at times that suit your schedule and your life. We will work together to determine the number of hours you would like to work on average, typically ranging from 10 hours a week to 3 days a week. Lawyers in our flexible legal workforce generally focus on matters that are less time sensitive and provide support to our KM team.

Responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Advising on, drafting, and reviewing commercial contracts on a range of matters including standard terms and conditions, routine supply and distribution agreements, service agreements.
  • Providing legal advice to lawyers, clerks and clients on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters.
  • Assisting with development and maintaining corporate and commercial precedents and other KM tools used in legal practice.
  • Collaborating with the KM Team to maintain a collection of best in class examples.
  • Preparing, writing, and editing a range of client facing blog posts and articles.
  • Developing corporate and commercial legal education materials for internal and external purposes.

The successful candidate will have:

  • At least 2-4 years of client-facing legal experience as a corporate lawyer in a top tier corporate firm. Experience need not be recent.
  • Excellent academic credentials with an LLB or equivalent.
  • Strong technical legal, analytical and drafting skills combined with the ability to use logic to solve complex problems, excellent organizational skills and rigorous attention to detail.

The candidate will report to the Toronto office with flexibility to work remotely within Canada. The candidate must be in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, British Columbia or Alberta.
