The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victim services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. Job Information 

Legal Division

Legal Division provides legal advice and representation to all government departments and specified public agencies. Our lawyers conduct litigation, participate in regulatory and administrative law hearings, practice in a variety of areas including real estate, corporate/commercial, Aboriginal law, Constitutional and human rights, labour and employment, provide legal opinions and advice, and conduct prosecutions of territorial offences. Legal Division does not provide direct services to the public.

We are seeking one (1) Legal Counsel with a minimum of two or more years' relevant practicing experience to provide advice and services to departments and agencies of the GNWT primarily in the area of litigation and environment and natural resources law.

Responsibilities could include other areas of law in which Legal Division lawyers' practice, which may vary but generally includes the following:

  • Civil Litigation, requiring appearances at all levels of court;
  •  Labour and Employment Law, including the collective bargaining and labour arbitrations;
  •  Administrative Law, requiring appearances before a variety of Boards and Tribunals in the NWT;
  •  Environmental and Regulatory Law, including providing legal advice on the regulation of land, water and resource development projects;
  • Constitutional and human rights law;
  •  Rendering legal opinions on a large scope of issues impacting the operations of government.

The position requires the ability to analyze the legal impact of significant issues, excellent communication, interpersonal and practice management skills. The incumbent will be expected to work independently on matters of recognized complexity and the majority of the work is assigned in a general way by the Manager of Litigation and/or the Director. Some travel will be required, depending on responsibilities assigned.

Applicants should indicate in which of the foregoing area or areas they are competent to practice. Experience in the relevant fields of law will be an asset.

Qualifications

  • A Law Degree and minimum of two years' doing either similar legal work as contemplated or of a type and breadth as to determine competence in a government legal counsel environment;
  • Candidates must be members in good standing of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories (LSNT) or be immediately eligible for membership in the LSNT. Evidence of membership in the LSNT is a prerequisite to employment.

 Equivalencies

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

 Salary Information 

  • The salary range for this position is from $55.76 per hour to $83.40 per hour (approximately $108,732.00 - $162,630.00) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.00.
