This is a hybrid position based out of our Toronto Support Centre or fully remote if based outside of the Greater General Toronto Area (GGTA). The Legal Counsel, Real Estate will play an integral role in the review and negotiation of leases during the dental clinic acquisition process, as well as overseeing efficient extensions and renewals. The ideal candidate will add strategic value and find satisfaction in the management of day-to-day legal matters associated with dentalcorp's lease portfolio. The successful candidate will work under the joint guidance of dentalcorp's Vice President of Real Estate and Acquisitions Counsel.

In this role, you will

  • Provide legal support for day-to-day real estate matters associated with dentalcorp's portfolio of 530+ leases
  • Review, interpret and draft commercial lease documents including leases, amendments, notice letters, assignments, subleases, licenses, estoppels and non-disturbance agreements
  • Prepare legal opinions based on facts and applicable legislation
  • Manage dispute resolutions and litigation relating to real estate matters
  • Provide assistance to our Support Centre employees, Partners and practice-level teams with lease-related inquiries (ie. Tenant/Landlord responsibilities)
  • Provide legal advice and draft correspondence related to leasing disputes
  • Act as a liaison with external counsel and landlord legal teams
  • Advise on title, off-title, zoning, construction and other due diligence matters related to commercial leasing

What we're looking for

  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario or Bar of Quebec
  • 3+ years of commercial real estate experience acquired at a full-service law firm and/or as an in-house counsel
  • Outstanding analytical, drafting and negotiation skills, with an ability to learn quickly and apply technical skills to a wide range of business initiatives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time-management and administration skills with a high-level of attention to detail
  • Bilingualism (written, spoken, comprehension) will be considered an asset
