ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.
Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Duties Will Include:

• Drafting bills, regulations and motions
• Advising and assisting Cabinet, Ministries, members of the Assembly and committees of the Assembly on legislative matters
• Attending meetings of Standing Committees and Committee of the Whole House and preparing amendments to bills, as necessary
• Attending meetings of the Cabinet Legislation and Regulations Committee as Counsel
• Preparing and giving oral and written legal opinions
• Assisting with corporate projects that require sound understanding of the legal system

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Technical Legal Experience

• Knowledge, aptitude and interest in legislative drafting
• Knowledge of drafting practices and techniques
• Knowledge and skill in statutory interpretation
• Knowledge of parliamentary law and procedure
• Knowledge and understanding of how policy becomes law
• Concern for the rule of law

Other Essential Skills

• Integrity
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Capacity for both big picture thinking and attention to detail
• Ability to manage competing priorities
• Demonstrated interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated word processing skills
