The Royal Canadian Mint is hiring a Legal Counsel who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel and as part of the Legal Services team, the incumbent will provide legal advisory services and, when required, litigation support, on a wide variety of challenging legal issues, with an emphasis on commercial transactions, contracting, procurement and marketing and advertising.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provision of diligent and solution-oriented legal advice and support in various fields relevant to Mint’s operations to facilitate the attainment of business objectives and manage risks, including, but not limited to, commercial law, intellectual property law, marketing and advertising law, competition law, labour and employment law, public procurement law and trade agreements applicable to the Mint (e.g., CFTA, CETA, WTO-RGPA, CPTPP, NAFTA).
  • Drafting and review of various agreements, including agreements for the sale of goods and services provided by the Mint, agreements for the procurement of goods and services and agreements relating to the licencing of intellectual property rights.
  • Review of tender documentation in relation to the production and supply of foreign circulation coins and related products and services.
  • Review of documentation relating to the procurement of goods and services on a competitive basis (e.g., notices of planned procurements, requests for tenders, requests for proposals, requests for quotes).
  • Monitor legislative developments in areas that affect the Mint; contribute to diligently informing internal stakeholders of relevant developments and assist in the implementation of required practices, policies and contractual documents.
  • Development of tools and training for internal stakeholders regarding key targeted activities to increase efficiency and manage risks.
  • Work according to “Lean Enterprise” principles, including drafting and updating standardized models for contracts, letters, or other legal instruments to increase efficiency.
  • Liaising with external counsel on an as and when needed basis.
  • Represent the Mint in an appropriate and tactful manner.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary teams in the Mint.

Requirements

  • Member in good standing of the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada.
  • Bilingual in both official languages (English and French) or able to attain an intermediate level of bilingual proficiency after enrolling in the Mint’s offered languages training.

Experience

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the practice of law.
  • Experience in providing advice to a Crown corporation is an asset.

Knowledge

  • Sound knowledge of the theories, principles and methods of Canadian and international law.
  • Sound knowledge of the legal, policy, business, and operational contexts of the Mint and government.
  • Knowledge of the Financial Administration Act is an asset.
