Unit Summary

The General Counsel portfolio is responsible for managing the legal affairs of the organization, and provides support and advice on a variety of legal issues including privacy, regulatory compliance and effective governance of the organization. As well, the office of the General Counsel proactively identifies, manages and mitigates against organizational risk.


Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Legal Services and General Counsel, the Director, Legal services position will ensure the department is viewed as a strategic business partner to the Board of Directors and to the organization. The Director, Legal Services will provide advice and support on a variety of legal matters, including contracts, policies, governance, health law, litigation oversight and regulatory matters. The role will provide additional leadership to the Legal Services team.


Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday, Days

This position is temporary until June 2026.


Qualifications

  • Law Degree (LLB) from a recognized law school
  • Call to the Ontario Bar (Lawyer Licensed to Practice in Ontario)
  • Minimum 7-10 years of related legal experience in Health Law
  • Experience in Contract and Commercial Law an asset
  • Demonstrated working experience in providing risk management and strategic legal advice
  • Demonstrated working experience in the health care sector, provincial ministries or other in house experience an asset
  • Knowledge of Insurance products, market & processes
  • Expert knowledge as to litigation process, administrative law processes and dispute resolution
  • Demonstrated initiative, independent thinking, conflict resolution and creative problem solving skills
  • Highly developed influencing skills for negotiation both internally and with external partners
  • Effective collaboration and team work
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills – written, verbal, presentation
  • Strong leadership skills
  • High level of integrity and trust


Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
