Company Description Kootenay Access Legal Clinic provides legal representation and advice to individuals and communities throughout the Kootenays. The clinic focuses on accessible legal services in areas such as employment, human rights, income security, debt, judicial reviews, and housing appeals. As a client-centered organization, Kootenay Access Legal Clinic supports people navigating complex legal and administrative systems. The team works collaboratively to promote fairness, uphold legal rights, and reduce barriers to justice for those in the region. Role Description The Legal Assistant will support lawyers and advocates with day-to-day legal and administrative tasks in a fast-paced clinic environment. Responsibilities include preparing and formatting legal documents, managing client files, scheduling appointments, coordinating communications, and maintaining accurate records and case tracking systems. The role also involves communicating with clients, gathering information and documentation, and assisting with intake and follow-up. This is a full-time, on-site role located in Nelson, BC, requiring consistent presence at the clinic to support in-person services and team collaboration. Qualifications Knowledge of Law and legal processes relevant to areas such as employment, human rights, housing, and income security. Proficiency in Legal Document Preparation, including drafting, formatting, and organizing legal correspondence, forms, and filings. Strong Communication skills, including clear, respectful interaction with clients, colleagues, and external agencies. Experience with Administrative Assistance, including scheduling, file management, data entry, and office coordination. Experience working as a Legal Assistant or in a similar support role within a legal or advocacy setting. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Comfort working with diverse clients and maintaining confidentiality and professional ethics. Proficiency with common office software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, case management tools). Post-secondary education or training in legal studies, office administration, or a related field is an asset. Ability to work on-site in Nelson, BC, and collaborate effectively as part of a small, client-focused team. Compensation - $55,000-$65,000 annual (Benefit and Pension) All successful candidate(s) will be required to have a Police Information Check (PIC) as a condition of employment (Note - Not required as part of the application process, however, a PIC will be required upon consideration for employment). This position is based on 35 hours per week and will be primarily be Monday to Friday. On occasion, candidates may be required to work the occasional evening and/or weekend.
