Job Description LEGAL COUNSEL18-Month Term CertainVictoria The OpportunityBC Ferries is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to join our Corporate Affairs team. Working closely with senior leaders across the business, you'll provide strategic legal advice, contribute to important corporate initiatives, and help manage legal and business risk in a dynamic and highly regulated environment. The RoleReporting to the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, your key areas of oversight will include: Providing sound and strategic legal guidance, advice, and counsel to leaders on a broad range of complex corporate, commercial, regulatory, and litigation matters to support the organization's long-term objectives, including risk management, growth, and operational efficiency; Supporting the organization's legal affairs by serving as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, acting as the central point of contact for legal matters, responding to inquiries, and delivering practical, business-focused legal solutions Participating in and leading high-impact contract negotiations, developing negotiation strategies, securing favourable commercial terms, and drafting, reviewing, and revising complex agreements through multiple iterations to achieve corporate objectives;Leading internal investigations into claims, disputes, and legal issues by conducting thorough fact-finding, documenting findings, performing objective legal analysis, and recommending resolution strategies that balance legal, financial, operational, and reputational considerations;Tracking and analyzing trends in claims and disputes to identify recurring issues, reduce organizational risk, and inform proactive enterprise-wide risk management strategies; Overseeing the full contract lifecycle, including drafting, reviewing, negotiating, executing, administering, and managing complex agreements while monitoring key contractual obligations, milestones, renewal dates, and long-term commitments; Ensuring compliance with applicable legislative, regulatory, and corporate filing requirements by monitoring regulatory changes, tracking critical deadlines, and coordinating updates to internal policies, procedures, and controls; Serving as the primary legal liaison between internal departments, external legal counsel, regulators, consultants, and vendors by facilitating effective communication, aligning legal strategies with business objectives, and managing external legal resources to optimize performance and control costs; Identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal risks while integrating legal considerations into broader enterprise risk management and strategic business decision-making; Providing legal advice and support across a diverse range of practice areas, including intellectual property, real property, construction and major infrastructure projects, commercial contracting, information technology, software licensing, procurement, human rights, litigation management, Indigenous relations, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, public law, maritime law, environmental law, finance, and public relations; Conducting legal research and preparing legal opinions, memoranda, summaries, and other legal documentation to support business decisions, often within tight deadlines and in collaboration with operational stakeholders; Supporting and implementing continuous improvement initiatives by developing and updating standard agreements, legal templates, policies, procedures, compliance programs, and internal legal resources to improve efficiency, consistency, and organizational effectiveness; Monitoring and managing key contractual dates, deliverables, obligations, renewals, and milestones to ensure ongoing compliance and effective legal oversight throughout the contract lifecycle; Collaborating with the General Counsel and senior leadership on strategic legal initiatives, special projects, and other legal matters as required; What you bring to the team Juris Doctor (JD) degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law in British Columbia Experience practicing law in a highly regulated industry is considered an asset Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills when addressing complex legal and business issues Exceptional communication, negotiation, influencing, and relationship-building abilities, with the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders Broad knowledge across multiple legal disciplines, with a strong understanding of how legal advice supports business objectives, corporate goals, and organizational success Ability to support organizational change, influence business outcomes, and contribute to strategic business objectives Ability to build and maintain productive partnerships and provide guidance to others as required Join us!If this sounds like your next great career move, please submit your cover letter and resume by July 7, 2026 at 11:59pm. Additional information The target salary range: $105,200 - $131,500 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity.
