About Japanese Social Services (JSS) Japanese Social Services (JSS) is a community-based nonprofit organization serving Japanese and Japanese-speaking individuals and families in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. Through culturally responsive counselling, settlement support, community programs, and educational initiatives, JSS promotes well-being, inclusion, and self-sufficiency. Working in collaboration with community partners, volunteers, donors, and stakeholders, JSS responds to emerging social needs while strengthening the resilience and quality of life of the communities it serves. Our Board of Directors plays a vital role in providing strategic leadership, ensuring strong governance, and supporting the organization's long-term sustainability.
Board Member (Volunteer)
Role Description As a member of the Board of Directors, you will help guide the strategic direction and governance of JSS. Board members participate in regular board meetings, contribute to strategic planning, and help establish organizational policies that support the organization's mission and long-term success. Responsibilities include: Providing governance oversight of organizational performance, finances, risk management, and legal compliance. Supporting the staff through strategic guidance while respecting the distinction between governance and day-to-day operations. Reviewing financial reports, organizational performance, and key initiatives. Participating in committees and contributing expertise to advance organizational priorities. Supporting fundraising, donor engagement, and community outreach initiatives. Serving as an ambassador for JSS by representing the organization at community events and stakeholder meetings. Staying informed about the evolving needs of Japanese and Japanese-speaking communities and helping shape the future direction of the organization.
Qualifications We welcome applicants from a wide range of professional backgrounds who are passionate about community impact. Preferred qualifications include: Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with fellow board members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Experience in strategic planning, governance, organizational development, finance, legal, human resources, healthcare, marketing, technology, or other areas that support nonprofit leadership. Experience in fundraising, donor relations, grant writing, corporate partnerships, or community engagement is highly desirable. Understanding of the needs and challenges facing Japanese and Japanese-speaking communities in the Greater Toronto Area. Japanese language proficiency is an asset but is not required. A demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive community service. The ability to commit time to board meetings, committee work, strategic planning, and key organizational events.
