The Opportunity

As Manager, Audit and Investigation , your primary function is to lead the organization’s oversight of legal aid lawyer performance, billing compliance, and complaint resolution. The role ensures that contracted lawyer services are delivered in accordance with policies, organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and client needs. Leading a team of staff lawyers, investigators, auditors and analysts, this position helps protect the integrity, quality, and accountability of service delivery provided by LABC’s roster of tariff lawyers.

Key accountabilities include, but aren't limited to:

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and lead the Audit and Investigation department, setting its strategy, work plans, and operating procedures
  • Establish and maintain policies, protocols, and manuals for the work of the department including billing audits, complaints management, and performance monitoring.

Complaint Management

  • Oversee the intake, triage, investigation, and resolution of client complaints relating to tariff lawyer conduct and performance in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Establish and maintain complaint processes that are transparent, fair, timely and efficient with appropriate escalation and prioritization protocols

Billing Audit & Compliance

  • Direct risk-based as well as random audits of tariff lawyer billings to assess compliance with policies and contractual terms
  • Maintain a framework for annual audit cycles and continuous improvement

Reporting

  • Develop and prepare dashboards, reports and summaries to facilitate oversight and reporting, and to inform organizational strategic planning
  • Prepare and/or contribute to reports, to the Board of Directors and its committees

Supervision of Staff

  • Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, discipline, and dismiss department staff as required
  • Approve vacation, time off, training, expenses, and manage the attendance of department staff
  • Manage and oversee the work of consultants, and negotiate and administer their contracts as required

General

  • Represent the department, make presentations, participate in committees, and participate in LABC projects within other areas
  • Challenge current practices and evaluate opportunities for improvement

The Ideal Candidate

You have a Graduate or professional degree in law, business administration, risk management, accounting, or a related field. 5+ year of progressively responsible experience in compliance, risk management, audit, or a similar oversight function. Experience in oversight of regulated professional service providers (eg. legal, health care, financial) Prior leadership or management experience. An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered. You strive to exceed expectations and are a team player.
