About the Team Capital One’s Legal Department is seeking a talented and experienced legal executive with proven leadership abilities to serve as Chief Counsel for the Canadian business. The Vice President, Chief Counsel – Canada (“Chief Counsel”) will manage a team of approximately 10 legal professionals and 15 Third Party Management professionals. We’re looking for a capable leader with an expertise and strong interest in credit card banking, as well as knowledge gained in a major financial services firm and strong comfort with innovative applications of technology in the financial services space. The Chief Counsel’s primary responsibilities include providing strategic guidance and serving as a senior advisor to the President and Senior Leadership team of the Canadian business. This includes analyzing laws and regulations applicable to the business and advising management of significant decisions, legislation, regulations and rulings currently and potentially affecting the company. In addition, the Chief Counsel will be responsible for setting and executing on the strategic vision of the Third Party Management (Procurement) team. This highly visible executive will be called upon to assist senior executives in making informed and balanced decisions, influencing public policy decisions that impact the business, and shaping the overall strategic direction of the company. The Chief Counsel will work closely with other executives to understand the business’ imperatives and add valuable legal advice, which ultimately will assist meeting business line and overall corporate objectives. About the Role The Chief Counsel must: Demonstrate exceptional judgment and have substantive experience in representing national banks or other major financial institutions in support of transactions, contractual agreements, regulatory compliance and managing outside counsel when appropriate and necessary; Bring superb technical skills and knowledge, with a strong operational, results-focused orientation; Have a collaborative and motivating style; Possess the communication skills and gravitas to effectively influence and coordinate with stakeholders across the financial services business, the broader enterprise, and the legal team; and Demonstrate genuine business and leadership skills. Key Relationships: The Chief Counsel reports to the Principal Officer and President of Capital One Bank (Canada Branch) (“Capital One Canada”), and will sit on the Senior Leadership Team for Capital One Canada. Other key relationships will include the senior management team of Capital One Canada, the leadership of other Canadian Capital One businesses, senior legal executives in Capital One’s Legal department, senior executives within Enterprise Supplier Management, and executives in key stakeholder functions, like Compliance, Anti-Money Laundering, and Risk Management. Your Responsibilities: Developing and recruiting great talent for the Legal and Third Party Management teams supporting the Capital One Canada business; Developing an executing on a strategy for Legal and Third Party Management for the Capital One Canada business; Advising and influencing senior executives regarding legal, regulatory, and reputational risks involving the credit card business; Providing general legal advice and guidance to the business in the evaluation and prevention of legal exposure for the organization; Serving as a strategic partner with senior credit card business leaders as they grow their business and develop innovative customer service solutions.
