Position Overview Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor, the Senior Legal Counsel, Real Estate and Development Law will provide a full range of legal services, including the review and drafting of standard and complex land development agreements, including subdivision and development agreements, spine servicing agreements, site plan agreements, development charge deferral agreements, strata park and POPs agreements, as well as the drafting and negotiations of other various real estate related agreements, as applicable. The Senior Legal Counsel will also participate in corporate wide projects; draft and review bylaws and policies, as applicable; provide oversight and lead strategic operational initiatives for the relevant practice area; supervise and/or manage paralegals, law clerks, students, and other legal staff, as assigned; and act as backup to the Deputy City Solicitor, as required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Successful completion of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. • Minimum of five (5) years' experience practicing real estate and land development law, preferably in the municipal or government sector. • Exceptional organizational, facilitation, and interpersonal skills. • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while balancing competing demands and deadlines. • Strong political acuity and the ability to negotiate, facilitate, mediate, and present information to diverse stakeholders. • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, research, and decision-making abilities. • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to interpret, anticipate, and articulate highly complex, technical, and abstract legal information. • Strong relationship-building skills and a collaborative approach to working across departments. • Demonstrated knowledge of municipal government operations and applicable legislation related to land use planning and development. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and common software applications, including the ability to create accessible documents and presentations in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). • Demonstrated commitment to the City's core and functional competencies.
