About Us At Brownlee LLP, we have been serving public and private sector clients for nearly a century. While we are proudly rooted in Western Canada with offices across the region, our reach is national and global. Through our strategic partnerships, we maintain strong links across the country and a well-established involvement in the London insurance market. The Role We are looking for a full-time Associate with a strong foundation in civil litigation to join our Calgary-based insurance litigation team. In this role, you will focus on managing insurance disputes from initial assessment through to final resolution. You will work closely with our senior lawyers on complex files while independently managing your own caseload. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include: Drafting key documentation: Pleadings, motions, correspondence, and settlement agreements. Legal research & strategy: Analyzing complex insurance, liability, and damages issues and synthesizing your findings into actionable legal strategy. Client advocacy: Communicating directly with corporate clients, insured parties, domestic and international insurers, and opposing counsel. Litigation & appearance: Preparing for and conducting examinations for discovery, assisting with mediations, and appearing before courts and tribunals (both virtually and in person). What You Bring Core Experience: 1–5 years of post-call experience. Preferred Practice Focus: Prior exposure to insurance litigation (such as defense work or coverage opinions), or practical familiarity with personal injury law, product liability, professional negligence, and construction law, is a distinct asset. Courtroom Confidence: Comfort appearing before courts and tribunals, backed by a sound understanding of the Alberta Rules of Court and Alberta courtroom practice. Advocacy Skills: Proven experience drafting motion materials, written advocacy, and conducting examinations for discovery. Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written and oral communication skills, sharp attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset that fits well with a multi-office network. Professional Standing: Must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. Core Values: High integrity, a strong professional work ethic, and a genuine commitment to providing exceptional client service. What We Offer We provide an open and supportive firm environment focused on helping you build a long-term career. Our package includes: Competitive compensation and robust, practical mentorship. Direct client contact and early exposure to complex files. Comprehensive health benefits, including a fitness reimbursement program. Long-term savings support with our RRSP matching program.
