The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario's capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, adjudication and enforcement work. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

What We Do

The General Counsel's Office (GCO) provides expert, client-centred, legal, strategic and risk management advice to the Commission based on sound legal and reputational risk analysis.  GCO provides legal advice in a wide range of areas, including statutory interpretation, administrative law, securities regulation, civil and transactional litigation, corporate/commercial law, information technology/intellectual property law, procurement law and privacy law. GCO also has a particular focus on legislative reform.

The Opportunity

The General Counsel's Office is currently seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join their team. The Senior Legal Counsel will be providing in-house legal and risk management advice and support, in particular with respect to contracts and procurement matters, including information technology contracting.

Qualifications for Success:

  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario

  • A minimum of 5 years' practical experience in commercial contracting, including information technology matters and/or procurement

  • Strong analytical, research and writing skills

  • Strong negotiating skills and business judgment

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong customer-focused relationships, develop credibility and provide practical, constructive advice

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize demands and allocate time appropriately

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas would be an asset: public sector procurement, governance and accountability, legislative or rule drafting, privacy law, knowledge management and administrative law

  • Experience working on commercial transactions, including securities-related transactions

  • A minimum of 6 to 8 years' experience in corporate/commercial law, securities law, administrative law, and/or legal research, or equivalent knowledge, skills and judgment
