The role of Regional Canadian Counsel is a pivotal role to serve as in-house counsel for our Canadian operations.  You will review a variety of contracts, along with managing litigation, in regards to Waste Management's Canadian operations.  Your Law Degree, 8 or more years of experience and strong drafting and negotiating skills will be key in this position.

Authorization to practice law in a Canadian province, Ontario or Quebec preferred, is strongly desired along with fluency in French.  This role will travel up to 20% of the time.

This position will report to the Vice President of Legal Affairs for the Northern United States and Canada. 

I.  Job Summary

Serves as Waste Management's in-house counsel for Canadian operations.  This position drafts and reviews contracts and manages litigation, real estate transactions, and regulatory matters regarding WM's Canadian operations and contracts.  Also responsible for the management of outside counsel and coordination with WM's United States based legal department located primarily in Houston Texas, but also other offices throughout the U.S.  Will have regular communication and interaction with WM's Canadian executive team serving as their primary legal advisor.

II.  Essential Skills, Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the skills and be able to satisfactorily perform the duties and responsibilities set forth below.  Other minor duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Prepares, reviews and, negotiates legal documents on the Company's behalf, and assists management in representing the organization in legal disputes and transactions.
  • Provides general legal advice and counsel to management (Corporate, Market Area and/or District level) for strategy and policy development.  Reviews legal publications and pending legislation and advises management of changes that impact the Company, business and industry.
  • Conducts risk assessment in connection with customer, vendor, operations, industry and/or business issues.  Advises management on most appropriate response or action.
  • Responsible for management of outside counsel activities as necessary, including determining effective business and legal strategy to address litigation and/or other specific operations or Company needs.
  • Provides proactive legal and practical business advice to internal clients.
  • Interfaces with numerous departments and functions within the Company to work effectively and provide a high-level of service to our business partners.

III.  Supervisory Responsibilities

The highest level of supervisory skills required in this job is the management of managerial employees.  This includes:

IV.  Qualifications

A.  Education and Experience

Education:  Law degree

Experience:  Eight (8) or more years of experience

B.  Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

Authorization to practice law in a Canadian province, Ontario or Quebec preferred

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Fluency in French preferred, but not required.
  • Strong drafting and negotiating skills.
  • Highly ethical, and values compliance and confidentiality.
  • Detail-oriented, prompt and highly organized.
  • Comfortable managing numerous tasks and prioritizing deadlines.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Team player.
