Position Summary

The Legal Department at University Health Network (Toronto) has an opportunity for an articling intern position for the 2025-2026 term, starting by July/August 2025 for up to 10 months. The position is best suited for applicants with an interest in the field of health law.

This program is structured into rotations across UHN's diverse legal teams, including (i) Health Law, (ii) Research and Commercialization, (iii) Labour and Employment Law, Human Rights and Workplace Investigations, and (iv) Corporate Law. The aim of the articling experience at UHN is to enable students to learn substantive and practical legal skills in a healthcare environment and to make a tangible contribution to our mission.

Duties

UHN believes that the articling intern should be engaged in every aspect of our legal work. As the student's skills grow, they will take on increasingly complex and responsible tasks. Students can expect to:

  • conduct due diligence and research;
  • draft memoranda, pleadings for small claims court, and legal opinions;
  • advise on and draft commercial, licensing, pre-clinical and clinical research agreements;
  • advise on health law, intellectual property, and privacy issues;
  • conduct research on legislation and regulations that could impact employees;
  • investigate legislation and regulations that affect the healthcare sector;
  • update policy, compliance, and corporate governance matters; and
  • prepare for and participate in dispute resolution matters and litigation proceedings.

Qualifications

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be registered in the LSO's licensing process and have either:

  • completed law school by the start of the articling period, or
  • obtained a certificate of qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation.

If you are studying law outside Canada and wish to apply, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or otherwise authorized to work in Canada (with written proof under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act), and
  • demonstrate that your academic credentials are equivalent to a Canadian Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

  • Familiarity with online technologies, including research and AI applications
  • A high level of integrity and judgment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex regulatory standards into material that can be understood by a functionally diverse audience
  • Excellent client service, interpersonal and diplomacy skills, strong initiative, and the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders
  • Organizational and time management skills required to handle competing and simultaneous priorities with deadline pressure
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess legal risk in the context of business realities
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn areas about new areas and developments
