Job Summary

The City of Mississauga is seeking an experienced Commercial Real Estate lawyer to join its Planning, Development, and Real Estate group with a primary focus on providing support to the Realty Services team, in addition to other divisions within the City, for all real estate conveyancing and commercial leasing files. As a strong team collaborator, you will have the ability to establish and maintain relationships as you provide legal advice on a wide variety of real property matters

Due to Covid-19, most of our offices are currently closed to protect the health and safety of our employees, clients and community. As such, this position will be required to work remotely for an undetermined period. Once our offices re-open you will report to 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor in the Legal Services Division, the successful candidate will form part of the Planning, Development and Real Estate Group.

  • Provide advice on all aspects of commercial real estate law, conveyancing and commercial leasing
  • Preparation and review of agreements such as: Agreements of Purchase & Sale, Commercial Leases, Easements, License Agreements, Land Exchanges, etc.
  • Responsible for researching legal issues related to the Land Titles Act, the Commercial Tenancies Act, etc. and the preparation of legal opinions and reports
  • Conducts complex title reviews and generates written legal opinions
  • Guides project managers in Realty Services with complex real estate advice, including preparing and reviewing corporate reports to Council and by-laws.
  • Provides legal and procedural advice directly to Directors, Commissioners, members of Council and City staff
  • Performs other related duties

Skills and Qualifications

  • Law degree (LLB or JD) and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario are requirements.
  • Minimum of 8 years' progressive law experience in commercial real estate and leasing law, preferably gained in the private practice context is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and manage a large volume of sophisticated real estate and leasing files in a fast paced modern environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational/time management skills with a proven ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Solid research skills, proficient computer software skills, including familiarity with Teraview registration software, Westlaw and QuickLaw
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Municipal Act, 2001, the Planning Act and the Expropriations Act is preferred.
