Job Overview

The Regulatory Counsel will be responsible for assisting the Ethics, Compliance and Legal team on various matters with respect to Wawanesa’s Life and P&C insurance business and broker distribution operations. If you have 3-5 years’ post-call experience in-house, or at Canadian law firm, with a focus on Insurance laws and regulations, this could be the right opportunity for you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Researching and analyzing issues to provide legal advice and recommendations to clients throughout the organization on a variety of operational matters;
  • Providing advice and guidance on the legal and regulatory implications of existing, new or changed business projects or processes;
  • In conjunction with other members of the Ethics, Compliance and Legal Team:
    • supporting regulatory and legal monitoring activities;
    • analyzing and assessing changes to laws and regulations, and communicating those changes to stakeholders in a business-savvy manner;
    • developing and delivering in-person and other training programs on legal and regulatory requirements;
    • drafting, reviewing and supporting the development of key policies to address legal and regulatory risks;
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on key insurance laws and regulations;
  • Considering and providing commentary on discussion papers and other proposals related to new or changed laws and regulations which impact Wawanesa;
  • Supporting a strong ethics and compliance culture across the enterprise
  • Developing and maintaining legal knowledge relevant to the organization’s activities; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • 3-5 years’ post-call experience in-house or at Canadian law firm, with a focus on Insurance laws and regulations;
  • A law degree (LL.B. or Juris Doctor) from an accredited law school and eligibility to practice in Canada;
  • Strong drafting, research and problem-solving skills and abilities;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, time management and organizational skills, with a strong attention to detail;
  • A cooperative, enthusiastic and team-oriented attitude, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues at all organizational levels; and
  • A high degree of professionalism and unquestioned personal ethics, integrity and responsibility
