Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centred clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Reporting to the General Counsel (Shared Health) the Associate General Counsel will provide legal services in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment and will be responsible for:

  • Providing legal advice and services to Shared Health and the WRHA, and a number of healthcare administrators and providers affiliated with Shared Health and the WRHA.
  • Providing general legal advice and services regarding a variety of agreements.
  • Providing advice with respect to privacy and access legislation.
  • Contract negotiation, review and drafting.
  • Liaising with external counsel.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years experience as a practicing lawyer.
  • Experience in the areas of corporate and commercial law.
  • Excellent negotiating and drafting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and think concisely and analytically.
  • Proven ability to be an effective team member.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound and impartial judgment in conflict situations.
  • Computer knowledge and experience in a Microsoft Office environment.
  • Experience working with the healthcare sector is an asset.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • A member of good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to draft legal opinions and other written materials.
  • Knowledge of contract documents and specifications.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research.
  • Ability to draft legal documents, such as pleadings, legal responses, affidavits, position statements and briefs.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends.
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
  • Proven ability and aptitude for recognizing, investigation and analyzing problems, and for developing innovative solutions to complex situations.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Comfort working in a team oriented environment where the range of responsibilities is varied.
  • Ability work independently and willingness to assume additional responsibilities.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and complete work in a concise, clear, accurate and timely manner.
