The Opportunity: McElhanney is seeking a passionate, analytical, and experienced Corporate Counsel to join our respected legal team. In this role, you will provide in-depth advisory services to our operational and business support teams on a wide variety of legal and business issues across the organization. As a self-starter, you utilize your strong independent reasoning skills to turn complex legal challenges into practical solutions. As a leader, you are responsible for advising on a wide range of corporate, commercial, and other legal matters, providing strategic thinking and promoting risk management best practices throughout the company. As a trusted advisor, you will work alongside our Executive Vice President, Internal Operations & General Counsel and senior operational leaders in offering legal expertise with confidence.
The ideal candidate will be located a city center such as Vancouver or Surrey, BC, or Calgary or Edmonton, AB. However, we are open to candidates across British Columbia and Alberta who are able to travel as required for the role.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Provide legal advice and guidance on a wide variety of legal and business issues across the organization and McElhanney group of companies and present to employees and management.
Negotiate and draft a wide range of agreements (i.e., leases, services agreements, and license agreements).
Maintain and manage a repository of legal agreements and standard form contract templates.
Develop and coach Project Managers on risk management and contract negotiation strategies to minimize potential legal liability to the company.
Develop and promote legal compliance and risk management strategies and best practices throughout the company.
Develop policies relating to industry-specific issues, corporate governance, and regulatory matters.
Implement changes to operations and practices, as required, to reflect new legislation, standards, and best practices.
Act as McElhanney’s privacy officer, ensuring compliance with privacy legislation and regulations.
Assist with mergers and acquisitions and the legal aspects of other transactions.
Provide legal advice and guidance to minimize the risk of potential and actual claims against the company and assist with the management and settlement of claims.
Liaise and develop effective relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization, providing input on legal matters involving short and long-term strategic importance.
What You’ll Bring:
Degree from a recognized law school, and a minimum of 5 years related experience.
Licensed member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or Alberta
Knowledge of construction law and in house legal experience is an asset but not required.
Self-starter that possesses independent reasoning skills, creativity, curiosity, learning mindset, and collaborative style.
Demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive working environment.
Organized, attention to detail, good written and verbal communication skills, and excellent problem-solving skills.
Solid business acumen, confidence, and ability to provide advice that appropriately considers risk.
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
