The Court of Appeal of Alberta sits in both Edmonton and Calgary and hears appeals from the Court of Queen's Bench, Provincial Court and administrative tribunals. Members of the Alberta Court of Appeal are the core of both the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Courts of Appeal.
Legal Counsel to Chief Justice - Legal Officer 3:
The Senior Legal Counsel reports to and works closely with the Chief Justice of Alberta. In assisting the Chief Justice in her roles as Administrator of the Province, top judge, Court administrator, judicial educator, and public speaker, you will provide high-level research on a wide range of topics which may be legal, social, institutional, economic or procedural in nature. This work involves analyzing case law and statutes, assessing their impact, and providing advice and/or interpretations on a wide range of complex matters relating to legal issues. This position may also involve reviewing appeal matters before the Court, and drafting pre-hearing summaries, briefs and memoranda.

The ideal candidate will take a proactive approach to identifying, assessing and referring to the Chief Justice legal matters which involve issues of substantial importance, and must be able to propose strategic solutions and successfully implement changes as required. This will require the incumbent to have the ability to think and analyze situations quickly in a demanding environment.
Legal Counsel - Legal Officer 2:
The Legal Counsel will assist two Court of Appeal Justices. You will help the Justices prepare for the hearing of appeals and applications, do legal research, prepare legal memoranda, edit materials, and draft various communications. You will be required to assist with administrative responsibilities, work co-operatively with other Justices and court legal counsel, and supervise articling students.
The position is intellectually demanding and offers an exceptional opportunity to work closely with an Appellate Judge(s) on a daily basis. As well, you will work with the Justice(s) in a mentoring relationship, and will gain a unique and valuable perspective in the practice of appellate law and written advocacy.
For both positions, exceptional organizational, problem-solving, prioritizing/multi-tasking skills, and exemplary written and verbal communication skills, are essential. Well-developed legal research skills are also required. The incumbent must be able to work in a highly demanding environment with limited supervision.
Salary commensurate with experience:
Legal Officer 2 - $5,517.78 - $6,833.07 bi-weekly
Legal Officer 3 - $7,115.61 - $7,889.89 bi-weekly. Closing Date: April 30, 2018. Job ID #1048187
Both positions are two-year contract positions from the date of commencement with the possibility of renewal.
