We are looking for an experienced lawyer to join our dynamic Downstream Canada legal team. In this role, you will provide legal advice and commercial input on a broad range of matters relating to our downstream operations across Canada.

You may use your expertise to:

  • Provide legal advice and leadership on a broad range of matters, including with respect to regulatory matters, commercial transactions, litigation, real property, governance, operations, and business processes
  • Engage in negotiations and draft agreements for commercial transactions
  • Support our team of real property paralegals
  • Advise on competition, privacy, and franchise matters
  • Manage litigation
  • Enable innovative technology development initiatives and technology investments
  • Provide advice on various legislative requirements
  • Proactively identify and manage areas of legal risk

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years or more of legal experience in commercial, litigation or energy law in private practice or an in-house environment
  • A Juris Doctor degree or LLB and member of the Law Society of Alberta
  • The ability to synthesize a wide range of principles, issues, needs and outcomes, balancing legal, commercial, operational, and other matters
  • A strong academic background and proven career development to date
  • The ability to manage a diverse workload in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • A high degree of flexibility and ability to readily adapt to changes in Suncor's business priorities and plans
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • An innovative and creative way of problem solving with a demonstrated ability to think "outside the box" and find practical solutions towards achieving a desired business outcome within corporate and legal parameters
  • Alignment with our values: safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity
    Preference for:
  • Experience with commercial real estate transactions

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Periodic travel may be required for this role
