Our Regulatory, Environmental & Indigenous group at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes) is growing. Blakes is widely regarded as the market leader for regulatory, environmental & indigenous matters, and we are looking for an associate with four to seven years of direct experience to join the Calgary office.
Blakes has a top-ranked regulatory, environmental and Indigenous practice, supported by highly respected and nationally recognized lawyers. Our practice involves representing a wide variety of energy, resource and power clients before a number of federal, provincial and territorial regulators to, among other things, obtain approvals for major projects. Our practice also involves working closely with members of various legal groups within Blakes, including Corporate & Commercial, Litigation, Financial Services, Commercial Real Estate, Municipal & Planning, and Restructuring & Insolvency. We also provide environmental law advice to clients involved in business and real estate acquisitions, infrastructure development, land leasing and financing of commercial real estate transactions. We frequently oversee environmental site assessments and audits as part of major business transactions involving multiple properties across the country and around the world. In addition, we advise clients on aboriginal matters including negotiating impact bene?t agreements.
Associates in the Blakes Regulatory, Environmental & Indigenous group will:

  • represent clients’ interests as counsel in oral and written regulatory proceedings;
  • prepare written submissions for filing with federal and provincial regulators;
  • work independently and directly with clients, as well as part of the broader Blakes teams;
  • provide advice and assistance to clients on various regulatory, environmental and aboriginal law matters;
  • negotiate various matters on our behalf of our clients; and
  • provide legal and regulatory advice to support Blakes commercial groups.

The successful candidate will have:

  • substantive experience representing clients in a first or second chair role before federal and provincial regulators;
  • excellent written and oral advocacy skills;
  • advocacy experience before courts or regulators;
  • strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task to meet competing deadlines;
  • experience providing regulatory advice in the context of commercial transactions;
  • the ability to effectively delegate and independently manage work flow to junior associates and students;
  • a strong understanding of energy business and policy in Canada and worldwide;
  • experience in a wide cross-section of energy industries, including oil and gas development, pipelines and renewables;
  • deep knowledge of federal and provincial regulatory, environmental and Indigenous laws, regulations and practices; and
  • strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of an integrated team.
