JOB DESCRIPTION: $160k-$185k base + 32% bonus & 30% equity 4 weeks vacation + 6 additional days 5 days a week onsite in Mississauga Our client is seeking a in-house counsel focused on Privacy & Data Governance Counsel to serve as a strategic legal advisor supporting a highly customer-focused, data-driven business. This individual will partner closely with privacy, compliance, product, technology, commercial, and customer experience teams to navigate complex privacy, data governance, artificial intelligence, and regulatory matters. Reporting to senior legal leadership, this role will be responsible for providing practical guidance on customer data usage, privacy compliance, product innovation, emerging technology initiatives, and evolving privacy regulations. The successful candidate will combine strong legal expertise with business acumen, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions while supporting growth and innovation. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic and highly collaborative privacy lawyer who understands both the legal and business implications of customer data usage. They are comfortable advising senior stakeholders in a fast-paced technology environment, can independently assess risk and recommend solutions, and are passionate about helping organizations innovate responsibly. The successful candidate will be intellectually curious, commercially minded, and excited by the evolving intersection of privacy, data governance, artificial intelligence, digital products, and customer trust. This is a director-level individual contributor position with significant visibility across the organization. This role requires 5 days on-site in Mississauga REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - 7-10+ years of corporate commercial legal experience a focus on privacy and/e-commerce technology experience - JD/LLB and membership in good standing with a Canadian law society. - Significant experience advising on privacy law, data governance, consumer protection, and customer data usage. - Proven experience supporting customer-facing businesses that collect, manage, or leverage consumer data. - Deep understanding of privacy compliance obligations related to the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and protection of customer information. - Experience advising on data subject rights requests, including access, deletion, correction, portability, and other privacy-related inquiries. - Experience supporting consent management programs and advising on lawful bases for data collection and processing activities. - Strong understanding of privacy notice development, customer disclosures, consent language, and customer-facing privacy communications. - Experience partnering with compliance teams to update and maintain privacy policies, privacy notices, and governance frameworks. - Demonstrated experience advising business stakeholders on the privacy implications of launching new products, services, digital capabilities, and customer experiences. - Strong understanding of technology, ecommerce, digital platforms, customer-facing applications, and data-driven business models. - Experience negotiating complex commercial, technology, software, data-sharing, and strategic partnership agreements. - Draft, negotiate, and advise on commercial, technology, vendor, data-sharing, and strategic partnership agreements. - Monitor privacy, consumer protection, technology, and artificial intelligence regulatory developments and translate those changes into actionable business guidance. - Advise stakeholders on the lawful and responsible collection, use, sharing, retention, and governance of customer data. - Provide guidance regarding customer consent mechanisms, preference management programs, and privacy compliance requirements. - Support the review, investigation, and response process for data subject rights requests and privacy-related inquiries. - Partner with compliance teams to draft, review, and maintain privacy notices, customer disclosures, policies, and governance documentation. Candidates should have substantial experience advising customer-facing, data-driven businesses on privacy compliance, data governance, consumer protection, digital products, and complex commercial and technology agreements.
