Legal Assistant and Paralegal

Seize this opportunity to be a linchpin to the smooth and efficient operation of Canada Post's Legal Affairs office in Toronto, ON.

As a Legal Assistant and Paralegal, you will assist counsel in a wide variety of administrative and law clerk/paralegal duties, primarily focusing on labour arbitration and insurance defense matters. Working in a highly confidential and fast-paced environment, you will demonstrate your exceptional time management and organizational skills, strong attention to detail and ability to take initiative and work independently. You will be relied on to provide timely, accurate responses and bring urgent requests for information to counsel's attention. In addition, you will liaise with various internal departments and law firms, gather data to develop and maintain reports, and coordinate follow-up for all priority actions. Undertaking special projects and ensuring the overall efficient administration of the office will also fall under your responsibilities.

YOUR DUTIES as a Legal Assistant and Paralegal will be varied. Specifically, you will:

  • Provide all administrative services to legal counsel, including electronic filing and record keeping, document drafting, preparation of books of documents and authorities, calendar management, payment of invoices, ordering of supplies, etc.
  • Provide proactive case file management and internal reporting for all litigation matters (i.e. primarily insurance defense and labour and employment law matters)
  • Assist counsel in case preparation of labour arbitration and other labour and employment law files by gathering factual information and/or conducting legal research
  • Coordinate all priority action and ensure follow-up in conjunction with counsel or in counsel's absence
  • Maintain a legal database to ensure accurate reporting of all legal matters
  • Respond promptly and efficiently to all requests for information from counsel, internal clients or third parties
  • Demonstrate discretion when dealing with confidential and protected information
  • Multi-task and manage your time efficiently
  • Take initiative and work independently
  • Execute tasks efficiently and with strong attention to detail.

You bring A SUCCESSFUL TRACK RECORD to the role of Legal Assistant and Paralegal, including:

  • A college diploma or certificate in Paralegal, Law Clerk or Legal Administration and related legal work experience, OR a university degree combined with significant law office/legal experience (with experience in labour law and/or insurance defense practice areas being preferred)
  • Proven ability to excel in a team environment
  • Superior English-language oral, writing and comprehension skills
  • Superior competency with the entire Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to conduct legal research from all available sources
  • Excellent computer skills and the ability to adapt to new programs and systems.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who are also willing and able to represent Canada Post in Small Claims Court or administrative law matters.
